With three months of film screenings, talks and television special events to enjoy, Dickens on Screen at BFI Southbank takes a detailed look at the many and varied adaptations of Charles Dickens' work. From the lavish 1930s MGM adaptation of David Copperfield to a 1980s Portuguese rendition of Hard Times, there's plenty for both movie buffs and bookworms to get stuck into.
Dickens 2012
Part of the worldwide celebrations for Charles Dickens' 200th birthday in 2012, Dickens on Screen at BFI Southbank presents the cinema going audience with a fascinating array of feature films, shorts and TV adaptations of the famous British novelist's work. Running the gamut from the famous and popular to the rare and neglected, the programme includes gems such as a selection of pre-1914 short films inspired by Dickensian sources, set to a live piano accompaniment.
Compare and contrast
Other highlights of the Dickens on Screen at BFI Southbank season include the chance to compare and contrast different adaptations of the same source material. Screenings include the 1958 British version of A Tale of Two Cities, starring Dirk Bogarde at the height of his matinee idol stardom, as well as the 1935 American MGM adaptation, produced by David O. Selznick.
Made for TV
As many of Charles Dickens' most famous works were initially published in serial form, it's perhaps not surprising that some of their most successful adaptations have been in episodic form on the television. Three separate sessions in January take a closer look at the business of adapting Dickens for the TV, with archive clips charting the history of small screen Dickens productions as well as screenings of tea time TV series from the 1960s - 1980s.
