An installation of digital art at Canary Wharf tube station invites commuters and travellers to witness one man painting an enormous grain silo over the course of a year. Designed by artist John Gerrard, the digital art installation is entiteld Oil Stick Work, and depicts a single man painting one metre of black onto the aluminium surface of the silo for the next 28 years.

Digital art at Canary Wharf tube
The station sees thousands of people pass through its halls every day, and for one entire year, a very different regular will be turning up to work every morning. Arriving at dawn and leaving at dusk, the digital man created by John Gerrard will spend his days painting his digital grain silo, before departing underneath the digitally setting sun.

Art on the Underground
Commissioned by Art on the Underground as part of a series of contemporary artworks on show on the Jubliee Line, the digital art at Canary Wharf tube station projects a hyper real scene onto a bespoke wall for 356 days. Set to play out in real time, the man, whose name is Angelo Martinez, will follow the same working pattern for six days of the week, as he gradually colours in the silo with his oil stick crayon. Mimicking the patterns of the daily commute undertaken by Londoners that pass through the station, the art installation invites you to make comparrisons with the seemingly endless task undertaken by Martinez and the inevitable sameness of everyone else's working life.

Oil Stick Work
Entitled Oil Stick Work, the installation of digital art at Canary Wharf tube station, with its proximity to the banking world of stocks and shares, is a deliberate one. As the grain silo is covered with ever increasing black squares made by the digital oil stick, the artwork is attempting to remind viewers that America's oil supply will someday run dry, with the fact that the grain silo will be completely black in 2038 suddenly seeming all too soon.

Oil Stick Work, the digital art at Canary Wharf tube Station takes place from 28th March 2010 - 28th March 2011. Entrance is free.
