An exhibition entitled Doll Face at Museum of Childhood showcases the work of photographer Craig Deane as he highlights several of the dolls from the V & A Museum's collection.

Doll Face at Museum of Childhood
More than a dozen different dolls have been photographed for inclusion in the Doll Face exhibition, all of which come from the Victoria and Albert Museum's extensive collection of over 800. Selected from amongst a variety of dolls that speak, blow kisses, play musical intruments and walk, the chosen few are shown in large format portraits, giving the viewer a chance to scrutinize their faces in serious close up.

Still life photos
Treating the dolls as objects for a still life project, Craig Deane has captured the essence of each doll in the exhibition, by presenting their faces close-cropped in a much larger than life sized format. Here you can see all the detail of design, age and love that has been etched onto their faces. Although dolls are traditionally given to children as toys, the exhibtion of Doll Face at Museum of Childhood also examines the ways in which they have been valued by adults for their aesthetic qualities, nostalgic appeal and historical significance.

Miniature humans
Another aspect of Doll Face at Museum of Childhood explores the fasicnation that humans have with surrounding themselves with representations of their own being. Making images and objects that reflect their own faces back at themselves, humans are continually reinventing themselves through art and toys. Deane's photos in the exhibition explore a range of socially and historically significant dolls, including a CND doll from the sixties and a pedlar doll from 1830 amongst others.

The exhibition Doll Face at Museum of Childhood takes place from Friday 3rd September 2010 - Sunday 2nd January 2011. Entrance is free.
