Don't Believe the Type! looks at the ways in which the world of words hits us in the face everyday of our lives, from papers, billboards, product packaging and the internet to the more complex messages from art. Bringing together some of the coolest street artists around, the exhibition explores how these words have an affect on us all.

Don't Believe the Type! exhibition
Contemporary art curators Zero Cool venture once more into London with an exhibition of urban street and graffiti art. Taking part in Don't Believe the Type! are some very famous names on the urban art circuit including the likes of Asbestos, Ben Frost, Pure Evil and Copyright.

Simple yet effective
The art on show explores how the written word is an integral part of our lives, from the moment we can begin to form our own name with a crayon until the day we die. Whether the type is scrawled on an underground wall or covers the side of a massive building, the impact can be just as subtle or just as powerful.

Banksy's mates
Quite a few of the Don't Believe the Type! artists hail from the south western city famed for its graffiti art, Bristol. While Pure Evil helped Banksy out with his early shows, Copyright and China Mike are both Bristol born and bred. With her unique take on wildlife style imagery, Gemma Compton also works in Bristol and London.

Different strokes
From graffiti style art to pop art, and plain old contemporary art, there are plenty of different styles on show. Part of the appeal of Don't Believe the Type! is the mixed nature of the exhibition, which includes a variety of artists with various approaches to their work. Asbestos creates portraits of friends on found objects, China Mike has a strong graphic style, Hayden Kays works with sclupture and installation, and controversial Ben Frost depicts sick and twisted pop art, so there is plenty here to inspire you.

Don't Believe the Type! takes place at Underground Gallery, Bethnal Green Road from 10am - 6pm from Friday 11th - Saturday 19th December 2009. Please note that the gallery is closed on Sundays.
