East London

Celebrate the very best of east London culture, music and heritage at the EAST Festival 2010. With a huge array of live events including film screenings, bicycle tours, music and literary readings, the EAST London festival just seems to be getting bigger and better each year, so head to the eastern boroughs to get in on all the action.

EAST Festival
Showcasing the diversity and artistic talents of the people who call the Hackney, Spitalfields, Hoxton and other eastern London boroughs home, the 2010 EAST Festival features a vast array of special events to keep you entertained and amused. This year's festival focuses on architecture, the Asian sub continent, travel and minimalism, and features a number of special events, tours and talks at both the Museum of London and the Museum of London Docklands. Cycle East London
If you want to get a breath of fresh air at the weekend and take in some unusual and innovative live acts at the same time, then why not take a guided bicycle tour as part of the Cycle East London project. Giving you the chance to take in all the landscape and culture that the EAST Festival is so proud of, the bicycle route includes stops at east London venues that are holding modern jazz and contemporary music to entertain you. There's also the Song EAST series of free gigs at venues across the East End. East Commonwealth Games
Also taking place during the 2010 EAST Festival is a free interactive games event at Spitalfields Market, which celebrates Commonwealth Day by showcasing some of the most popular games that are played in Commonwealth countries around the world. Have a go at bicycle polo, try your hand at carrom or kabbadi, or simply enjoy live music from bagpipe players and dhol drummers at the opening ceremony. There's also the grand underwater fair at the Brunel Museum, featuring cocktails and Victorian style entertainment such as strongmen and fire eaters. Exhibitions and talks
If you're an art lover who appreciates a good photography show, then head to the Whitechapel Gallery and feast your eyes on images in the first major exhibition in London of both contemporary and historic photos from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Featuring 400 works from over 70 photographers, the Where Three Dreams Cross exhibition offers a unique insight into life in these three nations. The 2010 EAST Festival runs from Thursday 4th March - Tuesday 9th March 2010. Events take place in and around Spitalfields, Whitechapel, Hoxton, Canary Wharf and Hackney.
