Bringing a major retrospective show to London, the exhibition by Ed Ruscha at Hayward Gallery is a fantastic chance to see work by one of the most influential modern artists still working today.

Ed Ruscha: Fifty Years of Painting
As the title of the Ed Ruscha exhibition suggest, the artists has been painting now for fifty years, building up a catalogue of amazing images and pictures, the pick of which are now on show at the Hayward Gallery. From his contribution to Pop Art in the 60s to his iconic American landscapes, you can see a stunning collection of work in the exhibtion by Ed Ruscha at Hayward Gallery.

Artist and pioneer
Having been recognised as a pioneer for his work in painting, print making, photography and film, Ed Ruscha has consistently produced work that reveals his ceaseless dedication to his art, in a variety of media. He has influenced huge amounts of artists from Richard Prince to Anselm Kiefer, Andreas Gurksy to Jeff Wall, with his paintings and experiementation in that media.

Works on canvas
Fans of his work will be thrilled to see the paintings on show by Ed Ruscha at Hayward Gallery as this is the first time he has ever exhibited in the UK. 78 paintings in total make up the exhibition and the selection reveal the full breadth and depth of his skill, his experimentation with materials and formats, and his use of graphic designs and filmic devices.

Words and pictures
One instantly recognised element of the artist's work is his elegant words and phrases that are set against a coloured background. Taking anything playful or profound, the words chart an ongoing obsession with language in art, and the ways in which it can be explored in a non verbal way. Along with the language paintings by Ed Ruscha, at Hayward Gallery you can see some of his more recent work on American symbols and landscapes from the USA. Stylised logos, suburban landscapes and shrewd portraits of American culture all take their place among the collection.

The exhibition by Ed Ruscha at Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre takes place from 10am - 6pm from Wednesday 14th October 2009 - Sunday 10th January 2010. Please note that the gallery is closed from Thursday 24th - Saturday 26th December 2009 for the Christmas period.
