An Egyptian Book of the Dead exhibiton takes place at the British Museum which is set to re-examine the ways in which life and death in ancient Egypt are perceived. The first major exhibition of its kind to take place in the UK, this is set to be a blockbuster show centred around one of the most significant pieces of Egyptian culture.
Egyptian Book of the Dead exhibition
Not just a book to guide the ancient Egyptians in their journey to the afterlife, the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead sheds a great deal of light onto the ways that they viewed life before death. In the exhibition Journey Through the Afterlife, featuring manuscripts and other funerary artefacts, the British Museum is inviting visitors to explore the Egyptian way of life and death.
Egyptian Book of the Dead - the sequel
Contrary to popular belief, the Egyptian Book of the Dead exhibition reveals that there is actually more than just one book. Featuring in the British Museum exhibition are several different books, all of differing lengths which include many beautiful, coloured illustrations. Offering prayers, spells, hymns and instructions which would provide the dead with everything they needed to make a safe journey to the afterlife, the books on show will explain their content and much of the enigmatic meanings behind the rituals.
British Museum collection
The British Museum is home to a huge collection of these articles meaning the Egyptian Book of the Dead exhibition is showing an unprecedented number of the most important papyrus manuscripts. These fragile items cannot be on permanent display in order to preserve them safely, so fans of Egyptology should ensure that they visit the museum during this exhibition in order to see the full selection of works.
Journey through the afterlife
Alongside the museum's own collection many important loans from other venues are included in the show. Visitors to the Egyptian Book of the Dead exhibition will be able to view coffins, masks, statues, amulets and jewellery, alongside the papyrus manuscripts, which all shed more light onto the nature of the death rituals performed in ancient Egypt. Used from around 1600BC to the 1st century AD, these objects reveal how they and the texts were changed over the centuries into the way they are today.
Journey Through the Afterlife, the Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead exhibition takes place from 10am - 6pm, Thursday 4th November 2010 - Sunday 6th March 2011 at British Museum.
Tickets cost £12.00 or £10.00 for concessions. Online ticket booking for this event is not yet available - click back soon for more information.
