A season of film starring Elizabeth Taylor at BFI Southbank takes place during August as the Oscar winning actress and world wide star is celebrated. Having been a legend on the silver screen and an icon for many young actresses who followed in her footsteps, the BFI hosts Elizabeth Taylor: Screen Goddess in tribute to the violet eyed star who died in March this year.

Born in England, but having moved to the USA as child, Elizabeth Taylor first came to fame in the equestrian drama National Velvet in 1944. With a determined mother behind her and a fantastic on-screen presence, film roles began to pour in for the young actress. With numerous awards to her name, including two Oscars. With a fantastic catalogue of films, and her tempestuous love life always in the media, the Elizabeth Taylor season sets out to pay tribute to one of the greatest Hollywood stars of our time.

Screen giant
From the early days of her career in the likes of Butterfield 8, which won her her first Oscar, to the 1960s when she played the drunken Martha opposite her twice-husband Richard Burton in the hit adaptation Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf?, the season of films starring Elizabeth Taylor at BFI Southbank gives you the chance to see the glamorous actress in all her guises. From Shakespearean shrew to young naive bride, her ability to shine, smoulder or enchant is evident in all the films on show.

Asides from having one of the most instantly recognisable faces of all the Hollywood greats, Elizabeth Taylor's film career also gave her the chance to star alongside several other legendary actors and actresses. In the season of films starring Elizabeth Taylor at BFI Southbank you can see her perform with James Dean and Rock Hudson in Giant, Paul Newman in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Katharine Hepburn in Suddenly Last Summer, and with Richard Burton in many of her hits.
