Celebrating the launch of the new Proud Chelsea gallery, the Elvis at 21 photo exhibition follows the story of the King from the very early days of his career with photos taken by the world renowned photographer Alfred Wertheimer.
Elvis at 21
The photo exhibition celebrates 75 years of Elvis Presley with a collection of photos that have never before been seen in the UK. With images of the King backstage and behind the scenes, Elvis at 21: New York to Memphis examines this iconic star just at the moment before the everyone in the world knew his name. Following his life from his status as an unknown singer to a global star, the exhibition captures the pivotal moments when everything began to change.
Proud Chelsea welcomes Elvis
This exhibition is the very first show to open at the new gallery, and Proud Chelsea will no doubt be full of Elvis fans until the end of January. Taking a very personal view of what would become one of the most famous musicians across the globe, the 400 odd intimate pictures on show in the Elvis at 21 photo exhibition are some of the most esteemed images in existence.
Alfred Wertheimer
The man behind the lens of the Elvis at 21 photo exhibition is the internationally known photographer, Alfred Wertheimer. Wertheimer was hired to take the classic headshots of Elvis Presley for his record company, and had never heard of the singer at the time. Hired for one day, and staying for several months, the photojournalist began to build a portfolio of photos that captured the unguarded and more everyday moments in singer's life.
Elvis photos
Captured with his fans, before and after his concerts, in the recording studio and in his own home with his family, the pictures of Elvis is the Elvis at 21 photo exhibition bring a unique perspective to the viewer of this world famous man. Intimate, frank and charismatic, the photos act as an image diary of the young man who would soon become the self crowned King of Rock n Roll at the tender age of 21.
The Elvis at 21 photo exhibition is open from 11am to 8pm Monday - Wednesday and Saturday, 11am to 10pm on Thursday, and 11am to 6pm on Sunday. Entrance to Proud Chelsea is free.
