Entertaining the Nation at Jewish Museum takes a look at the vast array of Jewish entertainers, actors, comedians, writers and musicians that have been closely involved with the British industry for the past 125 years.
Entertaining the Nation at Jewish Museum
Looking at the world of theatre, film, pop music and television, the latest exhibition to open at the recently refurbished Jewish Museum examines the contribution the Jewish community in Britain has made to keeping us all happy. Whether its on the stage or behind the scenes, from the Victorian music halls to the contemporary comedy show, Jewish people have influenced the nature of entertainment in a wealth of ways.
Maureen Lipman to Mike Leigh
Whether you recognise this list of those from the entertainment industry as Jewish or not, you will certainly recognise their names. With the likes of Maureen Lipman, Sid James, Peter Sellers, Simon Amstell, Sacha Baron Cohen, Amy Winehouse and Mike Leigh all included in the exhibition, you can expect to find even more famous faces from the world of showbusiness in Entertaining the Nation at Jewish Museum.
Social history
Asides from making us laugh, cry or forget our worries for half an hour, the Jewish entertainers featured in the Entertaining the Nation exhibition have all made a massive contribution of British culture over the past century and a quarter. Not only have they represented Jewish culture but also changed the nature of popular culture and entertainment in this country with their talents. And its not just Jewish actors and frontmen that have been a major part of the entertainment world either: various Jewish people have worked behind the scenes at the business end of the deal, opening cinemas, producing films, and launching television stations. In the music industry people like Brian Epstein and Malcolm McLaren made names for themselves by getting behind The Beatles and The Sex Pistols respectively.
Exhibition highlights
Telling the stories of the men and women who have demonstrated the importance of immigration and diversity in terms of cultural development, Entertainin the Nation at Jewish Museum features film clips and excerpts from TV shows, costumes, props, vintage photos, posters and other glamorous items from the world of showbusiness. Examining the personal histories and looking at the ways in which other minorities have also been represented in the media, the exhibition is a full-on exploration of the world of entertainment seen through the eyes of the Jewish entertainer.
