The Extraordinary Heroes exhibition London event takes place at the Imperial War Museum and celebrates all service men and women who have been awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery. The exhibition also features the George Cross which is Britain's most prestigious civil decoration.

Extraordinary Heroes exhibition
London's Imperial War Museum is now housing the world's largest collection of Victoria Crosses, which are owned by Lord Ashcroft, the medals join the museum's own collection, culminating in 241 awards on display. Ranging from awards given during the Crimean to the Falklands wars, the Extraordinary Heroes exhibition showcases these amazing symbols of bravery, courage and leadership.

Artefacts and highlights
Alongside the medals, the Extraordinary Heroes exhibition also features artefacts relating to the stories behind the awards. Many of the objects are on show for the very first time and include items like the backpack worn by Lance Corporal Matt Croucher GC, who threw himself on an exploding grenade to save his comrades, and the diving suit of Leading Seaman James Magennis who made the dangerous dive to secure limpet mines on a target in 1945.

Stories behind the medals
To make the exhibition even more personal, a series of touch screen computers will enable visitors to find out the stories behind the medals and the people that won them, giving you a unique opportunity to learn more about the amazing actions of these special service men and women. Life stories, video clips and photo montages all come together to provide insights into all the medal holders on display.

Amazing feats
Arranged into seven different sections covering Leadership, Sacrifice, Aggression, Skill, Intiative, Endurance and Boldness, the Extraordinary Heroes exhibition tells these amazing tales of bravery and examines the individual's reaction to their own circumstances. By re-telling the forgotten stories of saving shipwreck survivors from shark infested waters or undertaking a covert patrol on a Taliban bomb factory, the exhibition hopes to inspire visitors with how extraordinary people can be in extreme situations.

The Extraordinary Heroes exhibition London event takes place from 10am - 6pm from Friday 12th November 2010 at Imperial War Museum London. Entrance is free.
