Eyeball Massage at Hayward Gallery

Eyeball Massage at Hayward Gallery takes place this winter as the very first major UK exhibition by Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist. Showcasing her installations, video art, sculptures and light work, this survey invites you to see pieces from throughout her career, from the eighties up to the present day.

Fusing images, text, music and vivid colour the works on show in the installation survey explore a variety of themes central to life itself: birth, death, family, love, the body and the natural world. Using size, scale, and both high and low technology, the artist invites viewers to question their responses to the art on show and attempts to change their perspective, sometimes literally.

Interactive show
One of the most important elements of Eyeball Massage at Hayward Gallery is the nature of the interactivity. As visitors to the show travel around the works in the main gallery and along the riverside in front of the Royal Festival Hall, they will also experience more artworks in the gallery shop and even on the floor of the toilets. As various light shows and images are projected onto different surfaces around the Hayward building, the visitors themselves will at some point find themselves at the heart of the projections and become an interactive canvas for the duration of their stay.

Art = pants
No doubt one of the most popular pieces on show at the Hayward this season will be the 300 pairs of white underpants that form the basis of Hiplights or Enlightened Hips. Located on a washing line that runs up the riverbank towards the gallery, each of the pairs of pants are lit from the inside, creating a glowing display of laundry. To accompany the pants in a line, another piece inside Eyeball Massage at Hayward Gallery has been put together to form a giant chandelier, which are lit from the outside with various images of flowers, grass and sky.

Exhibition highlights
Other notable inclusions in the show are videos projected inside shells and handbags, a monitor suspended in a bathing suit, a space where visitors can lie on stuffed pairs of trousers, shirts and jumpsuits, a fifteen metre wide projection full of characters from Rist's own imagination, and one of her most well known works, Ever is Over All, which features two endlessly overlapping videos of a field of giant flowers and a woman shattering car windows.

The Pipilotti Rist exhibition, Eyeball Massage at Hayward Gallery takes place from Wednesday 28th September 2011 - Sunday 8th January 2012.
