A collection of fake art at V and A Museum goes on show this spring as the Metropolitan Police Service unveils some of its most interesting and valuable fakes and forgeries.

Fake art
V and A Museum are proving that crime really doesn't pay with this highly unusual exhibition of fakes and forgeries from the art world. Including pieces created by one of the most diverse art forgers in the world, the display of fake art at V and A Museum is a fascinating insite in the world of art crime.

The art of crime
As art forgery continues to fool both the public and the experts, the people behind the fakes and the forgeries have continued to become ever more sophisticated with their craftsmanship. With over 100 objects on display, the collection of fake art at V and A Museum highlights the breadth and depth of art forgery that is currently taking place on the art market.

Fakes, forgeries and the law
As the exhibition explores the current status of art forgery as well as its history, the Met officers who curated this display also highlight the negative impact it has on the artworld, with not only the buyer, but the artist, the deal and the auction house all losing out financially. As criminals constantly look for new ways in which to finance their endeavours, the articles on show demonstrate just how feasible it is to commission and sell fake art in order to make huge amounts of money.

Art history
One of the most impressive collections of fake art to appear at the Victoria and Albert Museum as part of this display is that created by renowned forger Shaun Greenhalgh. Labelled the most diverse art forger in history, he has faked pieces from the Egyptian sculptures to Lowry paintings. Inviting you to step into the world of the criminal, the exhibition of fake art at V and A also includes a reconstruction of the forger's shed where he created many of his fake masterpieces.

The long arm of the law
Having amassed a collection of fake art that would be worth £4 million if it were real, the collection on show at the Victoria and Albert Museum delves deeper into the ways in which fakes and forgeries are defined. Take a look at the techniques detectives use to spot copies, the impact that fake art has on the art world, and the limits to which criminals will go to try and prove a fake is real.

The collection of fake art at V and A Museum, the Metropolitan Police Service's Investigation of Fakes and Forgeries takes place from 10am - 5.45pm, Saturday 23rd January - Sunday 7th February 2010. Entrance is free.
