Two fighter planes at Tate Britain have taken up residence in the Duveens Galleries until January 2011 as an installation of art by Fiona Banner. Renowned for her wordscapes and fixation with military aircraft, the two jet planes are her largest piece to date.

Fighter planes at Tate Britain
Entitled Harrier and Jaguar, the installation is the result of the latest Duveens Commission which sees artists fill the enormous galleries with their artwork for several months. Always something of a controversy, this year's inclusion of fighter jet planes that have recently seen active service will no doubt catch the attention of both the artworld and the viewing public.

Sea Harrier and Sepecat Jaguar
Taking over both ends of the Duveens Galleries, the two fighter planes at Tate Britain are installed in their unlikely homes in two distinct positions. The Harrier jet is suspended vertically with its nose pointing towards the ground, while the Jaguar is laid out on the floor with its undercarriage to the ceiling. Both have the attitude of animals, the Harrier with its newly inscribed feather markings and the Jaguar revealing its belly like a submissive dog or cat.

Ongoing themes
Words and signs are a continual theme of Fiona Banner's work, as are military aircraft of all sorts. In 1994 she transcribed the script of Top Gun as a frame by frame account, and has more recently created small models of all the war planes currently in service throughout the world, as well as a taxonomy of fighter plane nicknames. Now the installation of the fighter planes at Tate Britain for the Duveens Commission extends her exploration of this subject to the use of real aircraft, making for a truly stunning installation.

Harrier and Jaguar, the two fighter planes at Tate Britain are on show from 10am - 5.50pm, Monday 28th June 2010 - Monday 3rd January 2011. Entrance is free.
