Set to take over the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square is the latest innovative public art installation, which can be seen from 2012 - 2013. Part of the Mayor of London's continuing cycle of different sculptures and artworks that appear on the previously empty Fourth Plinth, the newest contribution will no doubt cause just as much excitement and controversy as its previous inhabitants.

Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square
Previous works that occupied the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square include the sculpture by Thomas Yinka Shonibare in 2010 and 2011 which was a replica of HMS Victory made with African textiles for sails. Other headline grabbing works that also took up the Fourth Plinth include Marc Quinn's sculpture of a pregnant Alison Lapper, and the mass participation public art project by Antony Gormley which took place in the summer of 2009.

New Fourth Plinth works
Continuing the cycle of artists work that will stand on the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square, artists Elmgreen and Dragset, and Katharina Fritsch have also been granted the chance to fill the space with their very own creations. Many people in London will be excited about the prospect of the forthcoming sculptures being put in place.

Powerless Structures, Fig 101
The idea behind Elmgreen and Dragset's sculpture is to recreate a bronze of a small child astride his rocking horse. Allowing Londoners to view the artwork on the Fourth Plinth alongside the other historical and military statues in the square, the artists are questioning the nature of heroism and commemorating historical victories. The Fourth Plinth sculpture for 2012 however focuses on a prospective win in the future as the child is still only young.

Katharina Fritsch
The other artist whose work is set to occupy the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square is artist Katharina Fritsch, whose work features a large statue of a cockerel in ultramarine blue. Her contribution to the Fourth Plinth series of artworks is entitled Hahn/Cock and symbolises regeneration, awakening and strength. The size and colour of the giant bird also introduce a surreal element, which brings in a sense of hallucination and uncertainty to the surrounding architecture. This work is scheduled to be unveiled in 2013 and will remain in place throughout 2014.

Taking over the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square, Elmgreen and Dragset's Powerless Structure Fig 101 will be in place from May 2012 onwards.
