Set to take over the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Sqaure in 2009 are two works from well known British artists. Part of the Mayor of London's continuing cycle of different sculptures and artworks that appear on the previously empty fourth plinth, the newest contributions will no doubt cause just as much excitement and controversy as its previous inhabitants.

Currently standing on the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square is a sculpture made from fluorescent lines entitled Hotel for Birds 2007 that was made by Thomas Schutte, but this will make way in spring 2009 for either a piece from Antony Gormley or Yinka Shonibare.

Continuing the cycle of artists work that will stand on the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square, sculptors Antony Gormley and Yinka Shonibare will share the next allocation of time, giving them the opportunity to fill the space with their very own creations. Although the final dates for the next installtion on the plinth have yet to be confirmed, many people in London will be excited about the prospect of the forthcoming sculptures being put in place.

The idea behind Antony Gormley's One and Other is a unique and very interactive concept that will allow Londoners to actually stand on the Fourth Plinth themselves, and become part of the artwork. Members of the public will be positioned on the plinth for a period of one hour at a time, over 24 hours and 100 days, thereby truly representing the diversity of London as a whole. One and Other also plays on Antony Gormley's previous artworks which consist of figures that have been scattered all over London and left on beaches in Liverpool. The only difference this time being that all the figures will be different, and real living people.

The other artist whose work will occupy the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square is the London born and Nigerian raised artist Yinka Shonibare, whose work featured in the Scratch the Surface exhibition which marked the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade. Shonibare's contribution to the Fourth Plinth series of artworks is a large scale replica of Nelson's ship, the HMS Victory made with sales of African textiles. The ship will be placed in a glass bottle and will reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of London through it's history and in the present day.

Taking over the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square, the installations by Antony Gormley and Yinka Shonibare will be in place some time during 2009.
