The exhibition of Francis Bacon at Tate Britain is the first retrospective of this major British artist since the 1980s. Bringing together his most famous portraiture works, along with depictions of animals and landscapes, the Francis Bacon exhibition is sure to be a very important examination of the artist's life and work.

Francis Bacon at Tate Britain
Set to be the largest display of his work to date, the show by Francis Bacon at Tate Britain will not only exhibit his classic and well known works, such as Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, but also many works that were discovered in his studio after his death. With about 60 pieces included in the exhibition, this is certainly a show for anyone with a love for British art and Bacon's in particular.

Iconic art
Capturing sexuality, violence and isolation the paintings of Francis Bacon have been acknowledged as some of the greatest of the 20th century. Famous for representing the shattered ideologies of the 1940s and his harsh, unflinching examination of death and the rawness of the human body, the works on show in the exhibition by Francis Bacon at Tate Britain illustrate the talents and philosophy of one of Britain's best loved painters.

Challenging themes
The exhibition not only explores the concept that Francis Bacon's philosophy of man as animal in a godless world, but looks at the consequences of that animalistic behaviour, with violent urges, lust an fear all depicted in his startling images. Most of his oeuvre is concerned with depictions of the human body, but included in the Tate Britain show are other paintings of animals and hard, visceral landscapes too.

Exhibition highlights
All of the works on display in the exhibition are presented as they were when first painted. But the highlights of the show will no doubt be the paintings and triptychs such as the Study After Velazquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X, Crucifixion, and In Memory of George Dyer, all of which are famous for their slightly grotesque and gruesome portrayals.

The exhibition of works by Francis Bacon at Tate Britain is on display until 4th January 2009, from 10am to 5.40pm daily. Late night openings take place on the first Friday of each month until 9pm.
