What with the plethora of art fairs taking place this weekend and next, you could be forgiven for being all art-ed out. But the Free Art Fair is a different animal, and one that is unique in the cutting edge contemporary art world where prices go from the reasonable couple of hundred to the ridiculous £15 million for Damien Hirst's platinum and diamond skull. At the Free Art Fair, everything is (you've guessed it) free.
Barbican art event
With artists from all over the country, including the likes of Harry Pye, Robin Mason, Jasper Joffe, Bob and Roberta Smith and Marlene Dumas, the Free Art Fair at the Barbican exhibits a collection of works that can be taken away by members of the public at the end of the weekend. A delightful idea, this gives passionate art lovers that do not have the budget to match their tastes the chance to get their hands on work that may have been exhibited at the Saatchi gallery or in the Tate. 2009 sees the third and final such fair, so this is your last chance to snap up some free art before the fair closes for good.
Artistic talent
Over 50 of Britain's most exciting young artists have contributed a painting to the collection, alongside several who work regularly in some of the most popular galleries in London as well as arts festivals across the country. If you are sceptical as to why these artists are giving away their work for free, don't be. The Free Art Fair is a generous exhibition of art, that gives the same chances to average people to own some stunning pieces. And don't expect the work to be below par either, just because of the lack of price tag. All the artists who have contributed to the show have donated a serious piece of their work, some being large scale paintings.
Special giveaways
Other artists particpating in the exhibition and art giveaway at the Barbican include Matthew Collings, Artists Anonymous, Geraldine Swayne, Pablo Helguera and Rose Gibbs. Alongside the exhibition of work, there's also a programme of performance art curated by Frog Morris and Lee Campbell. All in all, the show is a great opportunity to see some stunning art and to take home a unique piece of work from a very generous artist.
The exhibition takes place from Monday 12th October - Sunday 18th October 2009 at the Barbican, Level G Foyer. Opening times are 9am - 10pm Monday - Thursday and Saturday, 6.30pm - 10pm Friday, and 11am - 2pm Sunday.
