Regardless of whether you have a garden, allotment, courtyard, balcony, window box or simply a sunny spot near the windowsill in your kitchen, you can have a go at growing your very own fresh, ripe tomatoes over the summer.

Billed as the Tomato Flash Grow, the free tomato plants at Trafalgar Square giveaway is part of the larger Capital Growth scheme which offers practical advice, funding and support to community food growing projects across London. Extolling the virtues of locally grown, seasonal food and green spaces in inner city areas, the campaign has seen community gardens and plots spring up across the capital.

Proving a splash of colour for early morning commuters, the free tomato plants at Trafalgar Square event starts from 6.30am, when teams of helpers dressed as giant tomatoes will unload two lorries packed full of tomato plants. As an added bonus, one of the tomato plants will be hiding a ticket for the Chelsea Flower Show, so make sure you check your freebie carefully before transplanting it into its new home.
