The Freeze 20 exhibition celebrates the achievements and recognition award to 16 artists that launched an art show in London 20 years ago. Led by Damien Hirst, July 1988 saw the original Freeze exhibition in a vacant building in Docklands and now two decades on, many of the artists are famous for having their works hanging in galleries all over the world.

Having shocked the art establishment with their seminal work back in the late eighties, the Freeze 20 exhibition brings back together the likes of Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Matt Collishaw, Gary Hume and Fiona Rae to explore the work that they have gone onto achieve.

Having a huge cultural and social impact on the last 20 years of the artworld's development, many of the artists on show on Freeze 20 have been major influences on younger artists who have followed on behind them, and have also been nominated or indeed won the Turner Prize. In the Freeze 20 exhibition you can see art works from the period of their biggest cultural impact or seminal works that are well known in the art world. Showing alongside the paintings, sculptures and multi media works are archive press clippings and commentary that highlights just how influential each Freeze artists has been.

Artists like Damien Hirst and Gary Hume have gone on to become hugely successful, with their work being exhibited in major exhibitions around the world. Following their original Freeze exhibition, many of the artists were picked out by Charles Saatchi for his personal collection or to star in his gallery. They were also constantly splashed all over the media in cool magazines, but also faced a backlash as conceptual artists with no serious ideas.

Following the timeline of their art and showcasing the best works from the period, the Freeze 20 exhibition highlights the best of the Freeze artists careers and demonstrates just influential the exhibition of 20 years ago was.

Freeze 20 is on show at the Hospital gallery until the 28th August 2008.
