From Russia at Royal Academy is a stunning collection of French and Russian master painting from over a period of nearly 60 years. Collated from the four main art galleries in Russia, this is the first time that such as exhibition has ever been staged in Britain.
The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Art, the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the State Hermatige Museum and the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg have all contributed work to this amazing exhibition of art, making From Russia at Royal Academy a unique show that is sure to cause as muc of a stir with art lovers in London as the transfering of the paintings themselves did in Moscow.
From 1870 to 1925, the Royal Academy show covers many of the different schools of modern art, including Realism, Impressionism and Non Objective painting. With the likes of renoir, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gaugin and Matisse rubbing shoulders with Kandinsky, Tatlin and Malevich, visitors to From Russia will be initrigued to see the juxtaposition of the different artists and their different ways of approaching painting. It is also a chance to witness the fascinating exchange of ideas adn art that took place between France and Russia at a time of crucial political and revolutionary upheaval.
Examining four main themes, From Russia at Royal Academy looks at the Russian realists, contemporary social issues, scenes from traditional peasant life and Russian history. The Wanderers, an artistic Russian art movement who broke away from the St Petersburg Academy are a key part of exhibition. Heavily into realism, their estrangement from the establishment saw them focus on Russian landscape with profound results.
Highlighting the glorious history of Russian collecting and the country's enormous influence on modern art, From Russia shows works by Ilya Repin, Isaak Levitan, Valentin Serov and Mikhail Nesterov alongside French artists from the Barbizon school such as Theodore Rousseau, Charles daubigny and Jean Francois Millet, whose realistic style was highly influential at the time.
A wonderful show, examining the history not just of art, but of the country over the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, From Russia at Royal Academy is a spectacular exhibition of early modern art.
