The exhibition Future Beauty at Barbincan Art Gallery invites you into the visually stunning world of Japanese fashion. With designers from Comme des Garcons and Issey Miyake taking part, there is plenty on show for fans of fashion to enjoy.

Future Beauty at Barbican Art Gallery
Coming to Europe for the very first time is a comprehensive exhibition of cutting edge Japanese fashion dating back to the 1980s. Having made a hugely significant impact on the fashion scene in the late 20th century, many Japanese designers and their avant garde aesthetics are continuing to storm the fashion world all over the globe.

Kyoto Costume Institute
Not only does Future Beauty at Barbican Art Gallery feature a wealth of stunning clothes from the best in Japanese fashion, but the entire exhibition has been curated by the world renowned Japanese historian Akiko Fukai, who is the director of the Kyoto Institute. Exploring the marked differences between the European approach to fashion and that of the Japanese designers, this is your chance to see up close and pesonal the simplified aesthetics of their designs.

Exhibition highlights
Three leading figures from the design world in Japan are bound to be one of the biggest draws in the exhibition, with Rei Kawakukbo of Comme des Garcons, Issey Miyake and Yohiji Yamamoto (Kayakubo's protege) all featuring items from their collections. As Future Beauty at Barbican Art Gallery explores the nature of Japanese fashion, visitors will be struck by the radical unfinished look, the deconstructed style of the garment and the pairing down of detail to a minimum.

Avant garde designs
Taking the clothing out of the context of the catwalk or the fashion house and displaying the pieces as works of art in essence embodies the idealisation of what Japanese fashion is all about. As the designers challenged the notions of beauty in the 1980s and 90s, their clothes began the transformation from fashion to art. Whether you are a fashionista or a designer, or simply love the notion of avant garde fashion, the exhibition of Future Beauty at Barbican Art Gallery is the fashion show for you.

Future Beauty at Barbican Art Gallery takes place from 11am - 8pm (until 6pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, and from 11am - 10pm on Thursday, from Friday 15th October 2010 - Sunday 6th February 2011.
