A Gerhard Richter exhibition London event takes place across 2011 and 2012 as the German artist is celebrated with a huge retrospective at the Tate Modern. Coinciding with his 80th birthday, the exhibition, Gerhard Richter: Panorama, takes on five decades of work and includes several major works from key points in his career.

Gerhard Richter exhibition
London is no stranger to the work of Gerhard Richter as his work has featured at the National Portrait Gallery and the Serpentine Gallery in recent years. However, this large scale exhibition attempts to bring together all the various strands of his artistic outpouring, including photo-realist paintings, squeegee paintings, portraits, landscapes and history paintings in one full on show. The Gerhard Richter exhibition will also feature a series of glass sculptures created at various points since the '60s and some mirror works that were made around the 1980s.

Political influence
Much of the work produced by Gerhard Richter takes some form of political or historical inspiration at the heart of it. One of the first German painters to reflect on the country's recent National Socialism, he created paintings of family members who had been Nazis, alongside those who had been their victims. Other work on show in the Gerhard Richter exhibition London event looks at the radical political activity that was rife in West Germany in the 1970s, and visitors are also able to see his reponses to more recent significant historical moments, as September, a painting depicting the bombing of the World Trade Center, is featured too.

Exhibition highlights
Fans of Richters work know his paintings for their subtle photo realist style, but there is more to his art than this. Other paintings at the show at Tate Modern include a triptych of Cloud paintings from the 1970s, the Skull and Candle paintings from the 1980s, and a selection of landscapes depicting icebergs and mountainscapes, which reflect a historical link to the German Romantics. But nevertheless the portraits of his friends and family will no doubt be the stars of the Gerhard Richter exhibition. London art fans will be flocking to see paintings such as Ema (Nude on a Staircase), Betty and Reader (pictured, on loan from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art), which depict his two wives and his daughter in intimate settings.

Panorama, the Gerhard Richter exhibition London event takes place from 10am - 6pm, 6th October 2011 - 8th January 2012 at Tate Modern. Standard tickets for this exhibition cost £12.70. For more information on the exhibition and to book tickets in advance, call 020 7887 8888.
