The ViewLondon Review
Refreshingly anti-Soho, and with the most varied music policy on the gay scene, seven days a week The Ghetto is the unpretentious fashionista’s venue of choice. The VenueThe Ghetto is located in a basement on Falconberg Court, just off Soho Square and round the corner from Tottenham Court Road tube and Charing Cross Road. Descend into the dark sweaty club area and you’ll be confronted by bright scarlet walls and a large bar area.
The AtmosphereDespite being around for a while now, The Ghetto is anything but long in the tooth and continues to attract everyone from the trendy to the alternative-scene aficionados. The vibe is cool, but effortlessly so, and the clientele here are after drinking and dancing in the least pretentious manner Soho can offer.
Unlike many of its West End neighbours, this venue claims to select its staff on their personality rather than model looks, and it shows as they’ll always stop to chat, smile and ensure you’re enjoying your night, however busy it gets.
The MusicThe Ghetto offers different music every night of the week, with something to appeal to everyone. With rock, indie, pop, an RnB night and, of course, their infamous electro nights Nag Nag Nag and Cock, it’s worth checking before visiting to make sure you’ll enjoy the music on offer on the night you’re planning to attend. Regular DJs like Yr Mum Yr Dad and Johnny Slut spin the tunes on a weekly basis, but this club has also pulled in appearances from A-listers like Boy George and Yoko Ono over the years.
The DrinkOne of the biggest attractions here has to be what it refers to as its “affordable drinks policy”. After years of insisting no one should pay more than £4 a drink, even in the heart of Soho, there are drinks every night from £2, and frequently promotions on beers and alcopops from just £1. You won’t get drunk at this price anywhere else in Central London’s gay village.
The Last WordThe Ghetto is exactly what it sets out to be – a refreshing antidote to the over-priced and pretentious bars elsewhere in Soho, with music to get you on the dancefloor every night of the week.
