A giant bed art installation at One Marylebone is part of an series of artworks and installations included in the Club 21 - Remaking the Scene exhibition. Set to recreate the kind of art and atmosphere from the infamous 1980s club scene in New York, the exhibition is also inviting people to come and bounce around on a giant bed.
Giant bed art installation
The giant bed has been created by artist Jota Castro in a continuation of his Love Hotel, shown in a Paris gallery in 2003. In the Paris exhibition, visitors had to book the room, whereas access to the giant bed in London is free as part of the Club 21 Remaking the Scene exhibition.
Get interactive
Rather than taking a passive, voyeuristic part in the exhibition, visitors to the giant bed art installation at One Marylebone are invited to get interactive and have a little lie down, or as the artist has invited, make a little love. Whether you want to grab your partner for a rather public romp, or simply catch up on your beauty sleep, there's no denying that this massive bed can accomodate several people at once.
Cross-shaped divan
As the One Marylebone venue is actually a converted former church, the giant cross-shaped bed is conveniently located in the main nave, where the arms of the bed fit down the adjoining aisles. Measuring an enormous 11 metres long and 7 metres wide, the padded bed is decked out in black, and is illuminated by seedy red lighting.
Club 21
As visitors enter the exhibition, they will encounter a scene straight out of an eighties nightclub lobby, with previously unpublished pictures of the likes of Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquait, Madonna, Bianca Jagger on show. Reminiscent of Cold War Russia, and both English and California punk scenes, the main hall is set to be the location for sound events, performances, large sculptures and more installations. A series of composers and sound experiementers have contributed recorded pieces to the exhibition to recreate the concept of conversation.
The giant bed art installation at One Marylebone takes place as part of the Club 21 Remaking the Scene exhibition. Opening times are from 11am - 12am Thursday 14th and Friday 15th October, 11am - 8pm Saturday 16th October - Friday 22nd October, and 11am - 2pm Saturday 22rd October 2010. Entrance is free.
