An exhibition by Gilbert and George at White Cube Mason's Yard takes place this spring as the artistic duo make a return to their famous postcard art. Having not created art in the medium of postcards for the last 20 years, this new work entitled The Urethra Postcard Pictures, will no doubt garner much interest from the artworld and their fans.
Gilbert and George at White Cube
Created from 564 individual postcards and depicting seven different groups of pictures, a select 155 works from the Urethra Postcard Pictures are on show at White Cube Mason's Yard, where visitors can see the work expressing Gilbert and George at their most intent and artistically omnipotent. United by their compositionally identital status of a long rectangle with a single card in the central space, the artworks on show feature subjects close to the artists' hearts - namely the lowly, the discarded, the hidden, the awkward and the confrontational.
Picture postcards
Returning to the common themes of their artwork, the exhibition by Gilbert and George at White Cube sees them make use of standard and commercially produced images, such as telephone box cards, flyers and postcards once more. Depicting a world that is at once modern, urban and sexualised, in covert fashion, the pictures demonstrate an equality applied to all subject matter, be it sexually transmitted disease or nationhood and civic identity.
Art on show
Conceived as one of the largest group of artworks created by Gilbert and George, the White Cube selection gives visitors the chance to sample some of their visual intensity and the dominant unity of their composition. Having their held their last London exhibition back in 2007, when the Tate Modern staged their largest retrospective of any artist, the 2011 show by Gilbert and George will no doubt be extremely popular with their fans, and anyone with a passion for contemporary art.
The Urethra Postcard Pictures by Gilbert and George at White Cube Mason's Yard takes place from 10am - 6pm Tuesday - Saturday, Friday 14th January - Saturday 19th February 2011. Entrance is free.
