GSK Contemporary is a three month season of eclectic arts and creative events taking place at the Royal Academy Burlington Gardens from November onwards. With exhibitions, events, film screenings, debates, performance and music shows, GSK Contemporary celebrates the dynamics of contemporary art and the relationship to other art forms, ensuring cutting edge and exciting events throughout the season.
International artists
A broad range of international artists are on show throughout the GSK Contemporary event, with contributions from Europe, Asia and the US participating in over 100 exhibitions and performances. Presented in two seasons from November 2008 to January 2009, you can see new and unique art from all around the globe at the GSK exhibition.
Season of events
Season one of the GSK Contemporary exhibition looks at the links between art, performance and experimental theatre, with live performances from Rebe Pollesch from Berlin, and multiple screen installation works from Catherine Sullivan and Julian Rosefeldt. The second part of the GSK Contemporary season gives viewers a different perspective on the concept of the post apocalyptic world. Including one of the largest overviews to date of William S Burroughs, the exhibition includes portraits of the author by Robert Mapplethorpe and David Hockney, along with Burroughs' collaborations with the likes of Keith Harring and George Condo.
Shallow
One of the highlights of the GSK Contemporary season is sure to be the Malcolm McLaren multi media work, Shallow. Presenting 21 musical paintings created from old film sections, the work shows portraits of people thinking, wanting and wishing having spliced, repeated and manipulated film cut ups to create an unusual screening.
Flash
Also providing a background for some of the GSK Contemporary art, the East End restaurant and cabaret club Bistrotheque are setting up a pop up venue called, Flash, especially designed for the arts season. Hosting an Art Bar with it's own programme of events, you can see exhibitions from a mix of contemporary London based artists and a programme of live art performances on a regular basis too. Highlights include entertainment from Georgina Starr, Bob and Roberta Smith, Marc Camille Chaimowicz and Spartacus Chetwynd. Flash is closing in Januaruy 2009 and will sell off its contents to eager members of the public with an eye for style.
