Hadrian Empire and Conflict is a major exhibition at British Museum and follows the life and times of one of the most famous Romans in his passion for the military, architecture and Greek culture. An unpredented exhibition with over 180 objects combining to portray the man behind the myths, Hadrian Empire and Conflict explores the life and legacy of this most enigmatic Emperor.

Emperor Hadrian reigned from the year 117 to 138 and was renowned across the Roman world for his ruthlessness in battle and his dedication to Greek culture. In the Hadrian Empire and Conflict exhibition, you can see the artefacts that build up a comprehensive picture of this man as a poet, a politician and a lover.

Hadrian's Wall is the Roman Emperor's most famous legacy in Britain, built towards the end of the Roman campaign to keep the savage Picts out of England. But asides from being a shrewd military leader, Hadrian was also a keen architect and under his patronage many great buildings were constructed that had a lasting effect on the Roman world. In Hadrian Empire and Conflict you can see many objects from around the globe that represent his passion for buildings, with artefacts from different structures recovered from the ruins of his commissions being put on show.

Despite his ruthless military suppression of dissent and his successful campaigning to redraw the lines of the Roman Empire, Hadrian was also a tolerant and personable leader who traveled far more extensively than many of his predecessors. Meeting the people and understanding the cultures of the countries within his Empire was high on his priority list, and pieces from far across the Roman world make up huge parts of the Hadrian Empire and Conflict exhibition.

A hugely influential part of his life was his love affair with the Greek Antonious who travelled with him around the Empire. In 130 Antonious was drowned, and incosolable with grief, Hadrian had him declared a god and established the city Antinouspolis in his name. Artefacts such as statues, busts and silverware that were created in dedication to the deified Antonious are also included in the exhibition.
