An installation called Hairywood at Covent Garden will take over the piazza for part of the summer as the fairytale inspired tower invites visitors to climb inside for an unusual view of the location. Designed and installed as part of the Skin and Bones exhibition currently at Somerset House, Hairywood at Covent Garden is a not your average art installation.

Originally part of the plan to promote the Architecture Foundation;s temporary gallery, Hairywood is now being brought out into the open and giving Londoners a chance to experience its weird and wonderful nature outside in the Covent Garden Piazza. Sure to be a major attraction to the curious punters of Covent Garden Market, you will be able to expore the tower for yourself until the 20th July 2008.

Six metres high and embellished with a carved pattern inspired by Rapunzel's hair, the Hairywood tower at Covent Garden invites you into a periscope style setting, with a small elevated cabin that allows you to look out over the hustle and bustle of the Piazza below. Exploring the relationship between enclosed private spaces and the open public vista of Covent Garden, the tower is an once a viewing platform, an art installation and a fairytale hideaway.

The structure that forms Hairywood at Covent Garden was designed by 6a Architects and fashion designers Eley Kishimoto. Following on from the Skin and Bones exhibition which explores the relationship between fashion and architecture, the tower forms a link between Somerset House and Covent Garden, and marks the route between the two locations. A model of the Hairywood tower can also be seen at the Somerset House exhibition, so you can see the tower from above as well as inside.

Sure to be a great hit with everyone who visits the Piazza over the summer, the installation of Hairywood at Covent Garden will be on show to the public until the 20th July 2008.
