The Hayward Gallery 40th birthday sees some fantastic events to commemorate the opening of this major London art venue back on 9th July 1968. Taking place from Saturday 5th July until the finale on Friday 11th July, there is plenty to see, do and celebrate during the Hayward Gallery 40th birthday week.

Currently on show the Hayward Gallery is the Psycho Buildings exhibition, which is an adventure playground style show that invites visitors to get up close and interactive will all kinds of architectural exhibits that have been designed and constructed by artists. Part of the Hayward Gallery 40th birthday celebrations see renowned architect and designer Amanda Levete taking a tour of the exhibition on Saturday 5th July, where you can hear more about the intriguing designs within.

Psycho Buildings at Hayward Gallery

On show across the way from the Hayward Gallery is the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef at the Royal Festival Hall. Designed and crocheted by Australian artists wanting to highlight the endangered status of the natural coral reef that can be found in places like Australia and the Caribbean, the crocheted reef is the subject of a special night for the gallery's 40th bithrday, on Monday 7th July. Wool fans are invited to take part in a special crochet workshop where they can contribute their work to the knitty installation and see it grow before their very eyes.

Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef

No 40th birthday celebrations would be complete without an official birthday party and the Hayward is no different. Helping blow out the candles on a no doubt very arty cake are three generations of artists and curators who have exhibited and worked at the gallery over the last forty years on Wednesday 9th July. The Hayward Gallery 40th birthday also sees a special event with Antony Gormley, whose figures adorned the gallery and Southbank Centre rooftops last summer, and guests to discuss the Hayward Gallery and its environment, as they look at designing gallery architecture.

Hayward Gallery 40p Day

Ending the week on a great event, the Hayward Gallery 40p day on Friday 11th July allows you into see the Psycho Buildings exhibition for just 40 of your English pence. Dropping from £10.00 to just 40p on the occassion of the Hayward Gallery 40th birthday, the venue will be open for 12 hours with the special reduced fee. Tickets for the 40p day cannot be booked in advance, so be sure to turn up early or be prepared to queue.
