Whats On
Hundreds of teams will be competing in the Head of the River Race, an historic London boating event along the River Thames.

An historic occasion
The Head of the River Race is a truly traditional London event where teams of rowers take to the waves for a huge race along the Thames. Having first taken place in 1926, the race is now a standard event in the springtime London sporting calendar. Encompassing picturesque London views and a number of landmarks with plenty of good viewpoints for spectators, the Head of the River Race is a great day out for anyone who loves boats and racing.

Hundreds of boats
Boating enthusiasts will not want to miss the impressive Head of the River Race, featuring literally hundreds of boats manned by teams of eight. The boats will set off at 10 second intervals and make their way along the river during the morning. Following the course of the Oxford Cambridge boat race in reverse, the race is hugely popular and every year more and more teams sign up for a chance to take part. The fastest boats will be first, so turn up early for chance to see the winner.

A global boat race
Ever since the race started, more and more competitors have wanted to take part, and nowadays crews from all over the world sign up for a chance to win the Head of the River Race. 50 to 60 forgien crews take part each year with participants from Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

Show your support
Cheer on your friends and family that are taking part in the race, or just show your support for the other racers. Take part in encouraging those participating and soak up some of the competitive atmosphere while checking out some of the beautiful London riverside views.

The Head of the River Race takes place on Saturday 15th March. The race starts at Chiswick Bridge at 9.45am and ends at Putney Bridge. Crowds can watch the free event from any accessible point along the river.
