An exhibition entitled the Heart of the Great Alone at Queens Gallery takes place to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the journey to the South Pole undertaken by Captain Scott. Including photos from both the Scott's Terra Nova expedition and the Polar expedition undertaken by Ernest Shackleton, the show marks the extraordinary achievements made by both men and the stunning Antarctic photos captured on the journeys.
Heart of the Great Alone
Queens Gallery plays host to another stunning exhibition for 2011/12 as the Royal Collection invites you to see the remarkable icescapes captured by both George Herbert Ponting and Frank Hurley. Taken between 1910 and 1917, the pictures from the South Pole and of the sea journey from Elephant Island to South Georgia manage to encapsulate the brave and tragic elements of the expeditions undertaken in fatally freezing conditions.
Scott and Ponting
When Captain Scott set sale for Antarctica on Terra Nova in 1910, his crew included Herbet Ponting who was a successful travel photographer. Taking photos from the off, he captured the scenes of life on board, the very first icebergs the ship encountered and the stunning landscape and wildlife around them. On show in the Heart of the Great Alone at Queens Gallery are several of his spectacular images including a grotto in an iceberg, the moment the sea began to freeze and Captain Oates and his Siberian ponies on board ship.
Shackleton and Hurley
Spurred on by the achievement made by Scott and his team at the South Pole, Ernest Shackleton made an attempt to cross the southern continent on foot. He took with him the Australian photographer Frank Hurley, who is renowned for catching the very last moments of the ship Endurance before it was crushed by the ice. Many of the images taken by him in the Heart of the Great Alone at Queens Gallery focus on life on Endurance before it was trapped in the ice floes, and the atmospheric pictures of it sinking beneath the sea, having been crushed by the enormous pressure of the ice.
The exhibition the Heart of the Great Alone at Queens Gallery takes place from 10am - 5.30pm Friday 21st October 2011 - Sunday 15th April 2012 at Buckingham Palace. Tickets for the exhibition are not yet on sale - click back soon for more information.
