An exhibition entitled Hexen 2.0 at Science Museum takes place this spring as artist Suzanne Treister takes over the Bridge Gallery with her examination of the various scientific avenues for communication, the develpoment of different technologies, the rise of the social internet and histories of various countercultures.
Hexen 2.0 at Science Museum
Bringing together a large scale collection of diagrammatic artworks, text cards and hand coloured reconceived Tarot cards, Hexen 2.0 asks a series of questions about the implications of new systems of societal manipulation and the controlling of society through interactive technology.
Science, technology and art
Whether you are a big fan of social media sites on the internet or can't undertsand the need to tell everyone what kind of sandwhich you had for lunch, Hexen 2.0 at Science Museum will certainly make you think differently about the various different social media sites that have become increasinly popular over the past few years. Examining mass intelligence gathering and the rise of sharing information through the web, the artist is taking a deeper look at the way in which the political, the social, the cultural and the military can freely form inter-relationships and share information, willingly or unwillingly.
Technologies past and present
Looking not just at the recent developments in the world of technology, the Hexen 2.0 exhibition also looks back at the history of communication developments. Focusing specifically on the participants of the Macy Conferences which took place between 1946 and 1953, these seminal figures attempted to set the foundations for a general science of the workings of the human mind.
Exhibition highlights
No doubt some of the most popular exhibits included in Hexen 2.0 at Science Museum will be the Tarot cards which have been reimagined for a 20th and 21st century educated audience. Characters such as The Fool and The Hermit are represented by author Aldous Huxley and Theodore Kaczynski, the Unabomber, portrayed with colourful illustrations and psychadelic imagery. The exhibition also showcases a video of a cybernetic seance, taken from the Macy Conferences, featuring a selection of psychologists, mathematicians, anthropologists, sociologists, and philosophers, who were renowned in their fields.
Hexen 2.0 at Science Museum takes place from Wednesday 7th March - Tuesday 1st May 2012.
