An exhibition celebrating hidden heroes at Science Museum takes place this year as the renowned venue takes a closer look at the many everyday objects that we often take for granted, which are actually triumphs of design.

Hidden Heroes at Science Museum
Entitled Hidden Heroes the exhibition sets out to celebrate the efficiency, the simplicity and the longevity of some of the most used design objects. From the humble pencil to the Post-it-note, the Science Museum looks at the history of the objects development, from the need to invent it right through to the ways in which these articles are used around the world.

Household celebrities
36 different objects are included in the exhibition of Hidden Heroes at Design Museum, including the ring binder, the rawl plug, the paperclip and the ball point pen. Alongside each of the design articles on display, the history of their invention and the ways in which they have been used are on show in the exhibition, giving visitors insight into the ways in which the most simple and effective of designs have taken shape over the years. Along with patents and adverts used to promote the designs, the social aspect of the product allows you to see the ways in which these articles continue to inspire designers from around the world.

Napoleon and the tin can
You may not be aware of the link between the British Museum and the invention of the rawl plug, or how an aeroplane inspired the creation of bubble wrap, but once you've visited the exhibition on Hidden Heroes at Science Museum, you certainly will. Along with how the teabag came into being, you can also learn the connection between the invention of the humble tin can and Napoleon himself.

Classic designs
Many of the products on show at the Science Museum have changed very little over the years, proving that sometimes the simplest solution is the best one. But several of the articles in the exhibition also say much about the age in which they were invented and why they are still used today. As the pencil demonstrates the rise in education across the globe, so the Post-it-note offers a non-digital alternative to those quickfire computer based communications. Still inspiring today's designers, the combination of materials and functional aesthetics come together to create some of the most effective products.

The exhibition of Hidden Heroes at Science Museum takes place from Wednesday 9th November 2011 - Sunday 8th January 2012.
