A stunning representation of the Arctic landscape takes place in the installation of High Arctic at National Maritime Museum this year as United Visual Artists take on the challenge of recreating the vast and breathtaking area.
High Arctic at National Maritime Museum
Inspired by a trip to the Arctic by UVA's Matt Clark, the large scale installation is set to be one of the most talked about pieces at the National Maritime Museum. Opening in the newly built Sammy Ofer Wing, the artwork fills the 820m square gallery space with an interactive, immersive and shifting installation of light, colour, energy and sound. Full of thousands of archipelagos that represent real glaciers and ultraviolet lights that react when visitors touch them, this installation takes you on a trip to an abstract Arctic.
United Visual Artists
The United Visual Artists are renowned for their boundary crossing work in the artworld, which mixes light, sculpture, live performance, digital art and installations, Having been on show in major arts venues such as the Southbank Centre, the Royal Academy, the V&A and the British Library, the UVA have channelled their artistic talent into creating this unique and unusual exhibition, High Arctic at National Maritime Museum.
Cape Farewell
The inspiration behind the installation of High Arctic at National Maritime Museum stemmed from Matt Clark's visit to the archipelago of Svalbard, which lies between Norway and the North Pole, alongside the charitable organisation, Cape Farewell, which attempts to bring about cultural responses to climate change. On the trip Clark came across the vast tundra of the Arctic landscape, which featured falling chunks of ice from glaciers, polar bears and monochromatic rainbows. Bringing those experiences into the installation, you can immerse yourself in the colours and lights of the Arctic in the National Maritime Museum gallery.
Interactive art
As well as coming across a variety of Arctic phenomena, Matt Clark also took inspiration from the scientists, poets and musicians that he encountered on his trip. Using the poetry of Nick Drake, who accompanied the expedition, along with a Max Eastley and Henrix Ekeus soundscape, High Arctic at National Maritime Museum becomes a shifting canvas of words and sounds, that relfect the nature of the landscape.
The installation of High Arctic at National Maritime Museum takes place from Tuesday 12th July 2011 - Friday 13th January 2012.
