The Horace Walpole and Strawberry Hill exhibition takes place at Victoria and Albert Museum during 2010 and examines the famous collector's collection and his legacy in the artworld. Having curated an enormous amount of art and historial artefacts, the pieces that were on show in his house in 18th century London, are now being presented at the V&A.

Horace Walpole and Strawberry Hill
This exhibition looks back at not only Horace Walpoles collection but his contribution to social and art history. Bringing together over 250 works owned by Horace Walpole from his 40 year collecting period, the exhibition sees these pieces shown together for the very first time since they were auctioned by his heir in 1842.

Art historian
Horace Walpole was the youngest son of Prime Minister Robert Walpole, and from 1747 - 1790, his fascination with art and history led him to collect various artworks and artefacts ranging from Holbein drawings, and armour to contemporary 18th century art by Joshua Reynolds and Anne Seymour Damer. With one of the largest and finest collections of miniatures of his time in his possession, the Horace Walpole and Strawberry Hill exhibition demonstrates just how Walpole was a pioneer of collecting, labelling and recording for future generations of art historians and collectors.

Tourist attraction
Strawberry Hill was home to Walpole and his collection for many years, and quickly became a tourist attraction in the village of Twickenham. As Horace Walpole and his friends designed the house and gardens, the V&A exhibition takes the opportunity of recreating the look of some interiors to inspire visitors with the way in which objects were presented to the curious in 18th century England.

Artistic legacy
Despite 45 more years of attracting tourists to the little Gothic house museum after Walpoles death, the Strawberry Hill collection was sold by auction in 1842. Seen as one of the most famous sales of the century, the Horace Walpole and Strawberry Hill exhibition takes a look at some of the sale items and memorabilia, which continues to attract attention from the arts and antiques world now.

The Horace Walpole and Strawberry Hill exhibition takes place from 10am - 6pm, Saturday 6th March - Sunday 4th July 2010 at Victoria and Albert Museum. Tickets are £6.00 or £5.00 for concessions.
