The Barbican hosts the House of Viktor and Rolf exhibition over summer 2008 in celebration of 15 years of ironic, surreal and beautiful design. Exhibiting their work for the very first time in the UK, the House of Viktor and Rolf exhibition invites you into their peculiar world of the upside down, the inside out, the fairytale, the modern art installtion and the highly influential.
Charting the career of fashion duo Viktor and Rolf, the installation at the Barbican gallery will cover both floors with their work, highlighting key moments in their career from 1992 to the present day. With haute couture designs, pieces from their early days of fashion, and plenty of their surreal and delightful works on show, the House of Viktor and Rolf exhibition is a fantastic exploration of the artistic nature of this designer duo.
A highlight of the Barbican exhibition will no doubt be the Launch collection, which the pair created back in 1996. As they were just at the beginning of their career, Viktor and Rolf created a miniature world of fashion, with dolls dressed in their catwalk creations, a shop in which to sell their garments and a fake ad campaign for their own perfume.
Along with their fantastic couture creations such as the Russian Doll which saw the designer dress a catwalk model in ten different layers of clothing in front of an audience, the House of Viktor and Rolf exhibition also looks at their more domestic achievements, such as their sell out collection for H&M in 2006 and the success of their real perfume Powerbomb which launched in 2004. Not forgetting their acclaimed Milan boutique, which is typical of their artistic sense of playfulness, as the neo classical interior has been installaed upside down.
Mixing performance, contemporary and conceptual art, the surrealism of the Dadaists and the beautiful fashion of high couture design, the House of Viktor and Rolf exhibition is an elegant celebration of the work of Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren. The show is open until the 21st September 2008. If you would like to book tickets for the exhibition, phone 0845 120 7550 for more information.
Accompanying the House of Viktor and Rolf exhibition at the Barbican gallery is The House of Viktor and Rolf book, published by the Barbican and priced at £35.00.
