The tenth annual commission in the Unilever Series, How It Is at Tate Modern is the creation of celebrated artist Miroslaw Balka. A giant steel sculpture measuring 13 metres high, 10 metres wide and 30 metres long, the installation stands in the gallery's Turbine Hall.

Turbine Hall installation
Playing with the theme of contrast between light and darkness, How It Is at Tate Modern takes the form of a steel sculpture that is not unlike a giant shipping container. The sculpture is mounted on two metres high supports, so visitors can walk around and underneath the structure before walking inside.

Black hole
In contrast to the naturally lit Turbine Hall in which it is housed, the interior of the How It Is at Tate Modern installation is pitch black. Art lovers can walk up the ramp of the sculpture and feel their way inside the totally dark interior, in a unique experiment in sensory deprivation and how darkness affects individuals.

Miroslaw Balka
Inspired by the title to a Samuel Beckett novel, How It Is at Tate Modern is the creation of Polish artist Miroslaw Balka. The title, and indeed the work of art itself, is meant to be deliberately open to interpretation, while the experience of being immersed in darkness and visiting the pitch black inside of the sculpture is intended to provoke an emotional response.

How It Is at Tate Modern runs from Tuesday 13th October 2009 - Monday 5th April 2010. The exhibition takes place in the Turbine Hall. Gallery opening times are 10am - 6pm Sunday - Thursday and 10am - 10pm Friday - Saturday. Admission is free.
