Taking place over two months at the acclaimed South Bank cinema complex, the Howard Hawks at BFI Southbank season celebrates the work of one of Hollywood's most respected directors.
Major retrospective
Revisiting the work of possibly the best studio directors of all time, the Howard Hawks at BFI Southbank season gives movie buffs the chance to see some of the filmmakers earliest work, as well as his most highly regarded. Hawks' earliest surviving film, which was first released in 1926 under the title Fig Leaves, will be shown on the big screen once again, as well as two incomplete works from the late 1920s, The Cradle Snatchers and Trent's Last Case.
Season highlights
For many film fans, the highlight of the Howard Hawks at BFI Southbank retrospective is bound to be the extended run of The Big Sleep, starring Humphrey Bogart as Raymond Chandler's archetypical private eye, Philip Marlowe. With a fast paced and slippery plot that is notoriously difficult to follow, the film should stand up to many a repeat viewing, not least because of the chemistry between Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
Silver screen legends
Other highlights of the Howard Hawks at BFI Southbank film screenings include His Girl Friday starring Cary Grant, The Outlaw starring Jane Russell and the Oscar winning Sergeant York, starring Gary Cooper. There are also three screenings of the legendary screwball comedy Bringing Up Baby, starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn.
Later works
The February screenings feature many of Hawks's later works, including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes starring Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. Western fans will no doubt welcome the chance to revisit Rio Bravo, starring John Wayne and Dean Martin.
The Howard Hawks at BFI Southbank film season takes place throughout January and February 2011. Cinema tickets cost £6.65 - £9.00. For more information on individual screenings, click on the link below.
