26 May 2013 The Londoner's Guide to London
The 2012 Deloitte Ignite Festival London event kicks off with three days of unusual and inspiring art. Curated by acclaimed artist Yinka Shonibare, the festival features exclusive dance, music, storytelling and more at the Royal Opera House. Deloitte Ignite Festival London, specifically Covent Garden, has been home to the restored Royal Opera House since 1999, and is responsible for producing some of the best and most spectacular live performances in the world. Bringing together art installations, cinema screenings, fashion events, live music and dance performances, this is a full on weekend of exciting contemporary and classic art and music, that will entice any lover of unusual live performances. Free performances and art installations As part of the three day Deloitte Ignitre Festival, almost every single space in the Royal Opera House has been transformed by contemporary artists. This year's festival is a celebration of traditional African and avant garde culture, which emphasises Africa's ongoing contribution to the contemporary arts world. African Weekend The programme of the Deloitte Ignite Festival London event features a treasure trove of special events. There's live music from Tony Allen and the Niaja Centric Orchestra, as well as free drumming, storytelling and dance workshops. There's also an interactive exhibition of contemporary instruments created by composer Victor Gama. Africa on the Piazza Meanwhile, the Ignite Festival is spilling out onto the Covent Garden Piazza for two days of open air screenings curated by Yinka Shonibare and John Akomfrah, the founding member of the Black Audio Film Collective. Bring a blanket and cushion and settle down to watch classic African films from the 1950s as well as modern day blockbusters. The Deloitte Ignite Festival takes place from Friday 31st August - Sunday 2nd September 2012 at Royal Opera House and the Covent Garden Piazza. Daytime events are free to attend if you book tickets in advance. Evening events cost £10.00 - £25.00.
