An exhibition entitled Illumination at Jewish Museum gives you the opportunity to see some rare and beautifully illustrated manuscripts this year. One of the first exhibitions to take place at the newly refurbished Jewish Museum, this is a stunning collection of articles brought to the museum from various prestigious locations.
Illumination at Jewish Museum
A collection of manuscripts from the world of Jewish scholarship and learning are the main focus of this exhibition, which reflect the local culture and designs of where they were made. Bringing together Judaism with many other faiths, this unique exhibition demonstrates how closely linked these various religions are. Despite many Hewbrew manuscripts being destroyed throughout history for being deemed heretical, some have been saved and treasured, making the ones that have survived even more important. Here you can see manuscripts and printed books dating from the 9th to the 17th centuries, that feature highly skilled illustrations from Christian artists and decorative styles heavily influenced by Moorish Spain and Gothic Northern Europe amongst others.
Treasures from the Vatican
Many of the manuscripts on display come from major British collections of religious artefacts, but several Hebrew treasures at Illumination at Jewish Museum have come from the Vatican in Rome. Whether the iluminated texts come originally feature the Moorish style of medieval Spain of the Gothic style of Northern Europe, they create a wealth of beautiful and stylised designs reflecting the faiths of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Exhibition highlights
Many of the artecfats on show at the Illumination exhibition are very rare and not often seen by the public. Alongside the oldest Hebrew book in existance, which has been loaned by the Vatican, visitors to the museum are also able to see the exquisitely illuminated Kennicott Bible dating from Spain 1476, a King of Spades playing card depicting King David, and a lavishly illuminated 15th century version of the Mishneh Torah, which is considered to be a Renaissance masterpiece.
Transformation
The refurbished Jewish Museum in Camden has undergone a transformation to tunr it into a brand new and cutting edge museum, crammed full of fascinating and historical artefacts, intriguing interactive experiences and fun events. Looking at the lives of the Jewish people in Britain since the 11th century, there is plenty of scope for learning new facts and understanding the social and cultural aspects of the faith. Alongside the exhibition of Illumination at Jewish Museum you will be able to see films, take part in family days and see live performances of drama and comedy.
Illumination at Jewish Museum takes place from Friday 25th June - October 2010. Opening hours are 10am - 5pm Monday - Wednesday, 10am - 9pm Thursday, 10am - 2pm Friday, closed on Saturday and 10am - 5pm Sunday.
