The In Memoriam exhibition at Imperial War Museum London commemorates the 90th anniviersary of the First World War and the Armistice which brought the war to a close. Looking at the people who lived and died during World War I and the consequences of the war both here and at the front, In Memoriam is a fascinating exhibition that will showcase previously unseen material and capture the spirit of the times.

In Memoriam
With material from 90 different people whose live were greatly altered by the war, whether they were in the army or civilians, the In Memoriam exhibition tells the stories of these select individuals and illustrates the ways in which the Great War had long lasting effects on many. Encompassing personal tales, military documents and unusual objects, anyone with a fascination for the First World War will be delighted by this detailed look at the men and women who were directly affected by all aspects of the battles.

Remembering the Great War
If you have ever visited the Imperial War Museum before, you will know that the galleries are full of the detail of personal life from the military during the First World War and the In Memoriam exhibition is no different. Highlighting the personal nature of the war from the highest to the lowest classes, stories from the war are told through the likes of the wreath which was thrown into Prime Minister David Lloyd George's car after the signing of the Treaty of Versaille, and a rosebud from the wreath which lay on the coffin of the Unknown Warrior. Other objects on show include the paint box and brushes used by Official War artists John and Paul Nash, the Military Cross awarded to Wilfred Owen, and the diary kept by Nurse Florence Farnborough at the Russian Front.

Ninety years ago
As the ninetieth anniversary of the end of the Great War takes place in November 2008, the exhibition is even more timely for those wanting to find out more about the lives of those who lived through one of the biggest periods of social and political upheaval in the 20th century. A selection of other works from the 1918 Hall of Remembrance are on show in the Singer Sargent Gallery which was created by the British War Memorials Committee which commemorates all aspects of the war effort, with highlights from the home front especially. Among the paintings on show are pieces by John Singer Sargent and Percy Wyndham Lewis.

In Memoriam exhibition events
To accompany the exhibition plenty of events will be taking place at the Museum for everyone from serious historians to kids and family. If you have an interest in the Great War and want to know more about it, there is no better place to start than the Imperial War Museum London.
