There's more Independence Day events going on around the capital than you could wave an American flag at, but without a doubt the celebrations for
Independence Day at Battersea Park are some of the best. Organised by Meetup, the expat American community, the event includes everything you expect from 4th
July celebrations - fireworks, food, face-painting and fun!
Pyromusical Display
It's the 7th annual Independence Day at Battersea Park. Last year's 4th July celebrations attracted nearly 1,000 and for 2009 the American Meetup group
expect many more, so they've upped the ante. There's all the usual trimmings - barbecues, fireworks and balloons but it's all been given an extra sheen. The
barbecue won't be filled with bog-standard burgers, instead its being run by Butcher and Grill and Bodeans. Fireworks are given more pzazz with the help of a
professional laser display which is made complete by the John Phillip Sousa pyromusical accompaniment. The event is free and everyone is welcome, American or
not!
Softball
It's a fantastic family event with entertainment for everyone. For kids there's bouncy castles and balloons, in patriotic colours of red, white and blue, as
well as face painting, no doubt along a stars and stripes-type theme. For adults there's two fully stocked bars which run until late into the night and
impromput softball games and frisbee throughout the day. All you need to take along to the Independence Day at Battersea Park is a picnic blanket, plenty of
sunscreen, some warm clothes for later and bottled water.
Park Rangers
As there's an organised firework display there's no need to take along your own pyrotechnics, nor do you need to take along your own barbecue - both are
strictly forbidden. And to ensure there's no silliness, there'll be park rangers throughout the event. The organisers of the Independence Day at Battersea
Park have rented the grassy section in front of the Pump House Art Gallery and there'll be clean toilet facilities available. The park is also being kept
open especially for the evening, and if you arrive after 6pm you'll have to use the Chelsea Gate in the North East corner of the park.
Celebrations for Independence Day at Battersea Park takes place from 2pm - 10.30pm, 4th July 2009. Fireworks start at 9.45pm and the bar opens at 5pm.
Entry is free.
