Featuring three thrones, jewel encrusted weapons and sumptuous paintings from India's royal courts, the Indian exhibition at V&A explores the world of the maharajas in comprehensive detail. The display at the Victoria and Albert Museum features over 250 visually stunning objects, many of which are on show in the UK for the first time.

Victoria and Albert Museum
Titled Maharaja: The Splendour of India's Royal Courts, the Indian exhibition at V&A is one of the highlight displays at the famous museum for the autumn 2009 season. Several of the spectacular objects on show are on loan from the royal collections of Udaipur and Jodhpur, giving London art lovers a rare chance to see some specaular artifacts outside of India.

Exhibition highlights
One of the highlights of the Indian exhibition at V&A is the Patiala Necklace, which is part of the largest single commission that Cartier has ever executed. Completed in 1928, the ceremonial necklace originally contained 2,930 diamonds and weighed close to 1,000 carats.

Lavish artifacts
Other highlights in the Maharaja Indian exhibition at V&A include three thrones and a life size elephant model sporting animal jewellery. Other beautiful objects include a carpet made from pearls, rubies, emerals and diamonds made for the Maharaja of Baroda, jewel encrusted weapons and large scale paintings.

Historical context
The Maharaja exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum covers the period from the 18th century to the end of British rule in 1947, and examines the changing role of the Indian royal courts during this time. The role of the Maharaja in supporting the arts to enhance their own royal status and identity will also be put under the spotlight.

The Indian exhibition at V&A runs from Saturday 10th October 2009 - Sunday 17th January 2010. Victoria and Albert Museum opening times are 10am - 5.45pm daily.

Standard adult tickets cost £11.00. For more information and to book tickets in advance, call 0870 906 3883.
