An Indian portrait exhibition London event takes place at the National Portrait Gallery during 2010 as over three centuries of work celebrates the beauty of this country's art.

Indian portrait exhibition
London is home to a huge Indian community, but expats and those of Indian heritage will not be the only ones to enjoy this fascinating exhibition. The Indian Portrait 1560 - 1860 brings together 60 different artworks from an international selection and sets out to examine the sphere of Indian portraiture which should be seen in the same league as other portrait schools around the world.

History paintings
Ranging from hugely significant cultural figures to studies of holy men, the paintings on show in the Indian portrait exhibition highlight a rich and complex history of Indian artists and figures. Mughal emperors, courtiers and Indian artists all feature in the National Portrait Gallery show, which demonstrates how many Indians saw themselves and how they wished to be portrayed.

Exhibition highlights
Several major loans feature in the exhibition that have never before been seen in the UK together making this a fantastic opportunity to witness these stunning paintings. Fans of historic portrait paintings will be thrilled to see the huge Mughal cloth painting of the Emperor Jahangir, along with a pair of images of the Mughal courtier Inayat Khan 'close to death'. Visitors to the Indian portrait exhibition are also able to see the striking portraits of Amar Singh II of Mewar and the Maratha general Ram Rao Phalke.

Indian history
As the style of portraiture in India developed in the Mughal court in the 16th century, it spread to the Islamic sultanates of teh Deccan and to the smaller Hindu kingdoms. As local styles were layed over the traditional Mugahl prototype this style prospered until Westernised approaches were reinstated with the European influence of the 19th century. Making for a fascinating insight into the recent history of the Indian portrait, the exhibition shows some captivating, vibrant and colourful examples of work from these periods.

The Indian Portrait exhibition London event takes place from 10am - 6pm, Thursday 11th March - Sunday 20th June 2010 at National Portrait Gallery. Entrance is free.
