Indian Summer at British Museum features a whole season of exhibitions and special events focusing on India, with gorgeous paintings, activities for kids and families, and even an exhibition of exotic plants.

Indian Summer at British Museum
With displays such as the Garden and Cosmos Exhibition, the Indian Summer at British Museum events aim to celebrate the history, art and culture of the Indian subcontinent. Garden and Cosmos runs from Thursday 28th May - Sunday 23rd August 2009, and is a rare chance for London art lovers to see paintings from the royal collection of the Mehrangarh Museum Trust of Jodhpur.

Garden and Cosmos exhibition
None of the 56 paintings in the Garden and Cosmos exhibition have ever been displayed in Europe, so this is a rare opportunity to catch some stunning court art from the 17th - 19th centuries. Highlights of the exhibition include paintings such as Death of Vali; Rama and Lakshmana Wait Out the Monsoon, pictured, which was completed around 1775. Tickets for the show cost £8.00.

Kew at the British Museum
Also taking place as part of the Indian Summer at British Museum is a special display of Indian plants from the botanical team at Kew. The India Landscape gardens at the British Museum features and exotic range of floral sights and smells from South Asia, and incorporates plants from a variety of India's different climatic zones. The India Landscape is open from 1st May - 27th September 2009.

Lunchtime lectures
A series of lunchtimes lectures on India will also be taking place at the British Museum over the summer, with subjects ranging from Charles Darwin's work with Indian plants, to different ways of looking at Indian sculpture. The lectures are free to attend, but booking is advised.

Events for kids
Families with children will also find plenty to do as part of the Indian season of events, with storytelling and arts and crafts sessions inspired by the exhibitions taking place every week day. The family sessions run Monday - Friday from 26th July - 28th August 2009; all events are free, but some events are ticketed and must be booked in advance.

Indian Summer at British Museum runs from Thursday 28th May - Sunday 27th September 2009. For more information on specific events, call 020 7323 8000.
