A stunning Italian Renaissance drawings exhibition featuring the likes Da Vinci and Botticelli takes place at the British Museum in 2010, with an amazing collection of art from the 15th and 16th centuries.
Fra Angelico to Leonardo
Starting in 1400 and working up to 1510, the Italian Renaissance drawings exhibition brings together some of the finest Italian draftsmanship and drawing skills to be seen in Britain for nearly a century. Taking works from the two of the most impressive collections to date, this exhibition is certain to be a hit with fans of Renaissance art and artists themselves, keen to see how the old masters did it.
Renaissance art
100 beautiful drawings from the British Museum and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, created during the Renaissance period are on show in this exhibition, charting the increasing importance of drawing and sketching as a skill during this era. The Italian Renaissance drawings exhibition examines the ways in which these changes were made, and allows visitors to see how and why subtle differences in drawing skills were made, until depictions were naturalistic.
Artistic influence
As the nature of preparatory drawings shifted to become more about expressing emotion or capturing fluidity and movement in the sitter, Italian Renaissance artists such as Da Vinci, Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Michaelangelo, and Titian began to make drawings more often, and not just as studies for creating paintings. Often inspired by classical sculptures and studies of antiquity, what began as a means of preserving ideas for later use, transformed into a dedicated art form in its own right, and now makes up a stunning exhibition of drawings at the British Museum.
High tech drawings
Many of the works on show in the Italian Renaissance drawings exhibition were drawn by artists who put more lines down on the paper that those we see today. Using X ray and infrared technology, the British Museum has uncovered the creative process behind the final sketch, and allows visitors an insight into how some of the most famous Renaissance artists in the world went about creating their drawings.
Fra Angelico to Leonardo, the Italian Renaissance drawings exhibition takes place from 10am - 5.30pm, Thursday 22nd April - Sunday 25th July 2010. Tickets are £12.00 or £10.00 for concessions.
