Telling the story of Jack the Ripper and the East End of London in its full and gruesome glory, this Museum in Docklands exhibition gives the public unprecented access to the murders and their legacy in the city of London.
Looking at the original documents from the time, with police files, photographs from the scene, letters from the public and oral histories from those who grew up in the Victorian East End, the Jack the Ripper exhibition gives a new perspective on the most famous of all London's murder stories.
Putting the East End at centre stage, Museum in Docklands has curated an exhibition that allows visitors to follow the crimes and the investigation as the events unfolded and understand more about the nature of the police at the time along with the lives of the Jack the Ripper victims and witnesses. Shedding light on the social history of the area, Jack the Ripper and the East End also looks at the poverty of Whitechapel and the maze like streets which were inhabited by the poor, the criminal and the murder victims.
Also on show are the papers from the time which took to the story in the same style as the Penny Dreadfuls which glorified and made much of gruesome crimes at the time. With fierce competition between rival papers to produce clues to the Jack the Ripper murders and theories about suspects, the media produced a frenzy of sensation around the crimes, leading to the police feeling the pressure to uncover the mystery quicker.
With everything on show from the media of the day, including the police reports and the accounts from the post mortems, Jack the Ripper and the East End shows how far the world of police investigation has come and the way in which the Ripper crimes have become part of London's folklore. A fascinating exploration of the murders which haunted the Metropolitan Police for many years, the real star of this exhibition is the area of London so renowned for its shifting communities and every changing face. The East End features as the backdrop to the story from start to finish and proves
itself to be an integral part of the murders, the investigation and the exhibition.
