An exhibition by John Bock at The Curve is the very first shown in the UK for the German born artist. Accompanying the major surrealist exhibition showing simultaneously at the Barbican Art Gallery, the free installation in The Curve invites you to get interactive with yet more surrealist art.
John Bock at The Curve
Renowned for his comical, eccentric and unusual approach to installations, performance art and film, John Bock brings his eclectic exhibition Curve-Vehicle incl. Pi-Man-(.) to the Barbican with a mixture of experiemental architecture and art lectures. Sure to be one of the most entertaining exhibitions to be held here, this is one interactive art show that fans of surrealism will not want to miss.
Look into the future
As part of the exhibition by John Bock at The Curve, the artist has created a series of metal pods that hang from the walls and ceiling in a kind of plug-in cityscape. Made from found materials and handmade elements, the set up incorporates a noodle bar, a clothes shop and a second hand shop, all of which make allusions to the original plans for the Barbican to feature a shopping arcade. Inviting visitors to wander in and around these structures, Bock has also invited a group of actors to give periodic lectures while situated in the installation.
Surrealism on film
Throughout the exhibition both John Bock and his actors deliver surreal mock lectures which take the tone of nonsensical quasi-scientific talks, commenting on the connections between art and various other subjects. To add to the surreal nature of the lecture, the person delivering the talk drives a motorised vehicle up to each of the structures and docks with it before commencing their speech. These lectures are then filmed and screened back as part of the installations on show by John Bock at The Curve, thereby continually adding to the exhibition's content throughout.
Surreal House
Running at the same time as the exhibition by John Bock at The Curve, the Barbican Art Gallery is showing the Surreal House, a full scale group exhibition featuring some of the best known artists from the early days of Surrealism right up to the present. Featuring works by Dali, Magritte, Louise Bourgeois and Duchamp, the show dives full headlong into the heart of Surrealism in the domestic interior, with sculptures, paintings, installations and film all on show.
Surreal House at Barbican Art Gallery
The exhibition by John Bock at The Curve gallery takes place from 11am - 8pm, Thursday 10th June - Sunday 12th September 2010 at the Barbican. Entrance is free.
