Plain Spaces by John Pawson at Design Museum celebrates and explores the work by the renowned British architect. Showcasing his work from the 1980s to the present day, this is your chance to get inside the man whose pieces feature in many major cities across the world.
John Pawson at Design Museum
Described by many as a minimalist, his style of work is clean, graceful and stunning, with simplistic elements often belying his rigorous self editing process. Bringing to the Design Museum several examples of his current work, along with large scale photos of his designs in situ, this exhibition includes a number of his world renowned commissions, such as the Sockler Crossing at Kew Gardens and the Calvin Klein flagship store in New York.
Architectural installation
Following in the footsteps of the V&A Museum's installation exhibition 1:1 Architects Build Small Spaces, the show by John Pawson at Design Museum also includes a 1:1 scale piece located inside the museum galleries. The site specific, full size space has been specially designed by John Pawson for the exhibition, and gives visitors the unique chance to experience first hand one of his architectural designs within the context of his retrospective.
Design and construction
Alongside the examples of his major projects and the installation piece, the exhibition by John Pawson at Design Museum also features a range of the actual materials used in his buidlings. Stone, bronze, wood and metal taken from a range of his projects including his own house in London, allow you to get to grips with the way in which he chooses his materials for their unique and sensitive qualities. The process of construction is explained to visitors too, with photos, films, sketches and models all on display, along with personal letters from Karl Lagerfeld and Bruce Chatwin addressed to Pawson.
Plain Spaces, the exhibition by John Pawson at Design Museum takes place from 10am - 5.45pm, Wednesday 22nd September 2010 - Sunday 30th January 2011. Tickets are £8.50 or £6.50 for concessions. Students cost £5.00, and under 12s are free.
