A retrospective of images by Ken Russell at Proud Chelsea takes place this summer, creating an exhibition of photos by the renowned filmmaker. Featuring both intimate and revealing work, the pictures show a different side to the man who caused a storm in the film world for his shocking and irreverent movies.

Ken Russell at Proud Chelsea
Following his progress as a photographer from his twenties into his thirties, the photos taken during this period chart his developing style and eventual transition into a filmmaker. Having worked as a freelance photographer for several years, this exhibition captures his unconventional outlook and his eye for detail that would soon become apparent in his cinematic output.

Retrospective
Poignant, surreal, funny and striking by turn the photos on show in the exhibition by Ken Russell at Proud Chelsea not only capture the spirit of his personality but the spirit of the times also. Taken during the period after the Second World War and before the youthful and invigorating sixties, these images reflect the transitional nature of the 1940s and 50s with changes in taste, fashion, culture and the people of the day.

One off show
Having captured London on film with his stills camera, Russell then moved onto the moving image, with internationally renowned results. Famous for such contraversial films as The Devils and Women in Love, which features the iconic scene of naked wrestling between Oliver Reed and Alan Bates, the exhibition by Ken Russell at Proud Chelsea gives you the chance to see beyond the provocative filmmaker and take a look at his fresh and less selfconscious side.

The Retrospective of Ken Russell at Proud Chelsea takes place from Thursday 24th June - Sunday 25th July 2010. Entrance is free.
